Creating “Flesh Torn”: iPad to Wax Mold to 925 Sterling Silver
Today, I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at one of my latest designs “Flesh Torn”. I started the foundations of this pendant while I was trading at the incredible ArcTanGent (easily one of my favourite festivals of the season). All my designs start from my iPad, then from there I start looking into the printing a resin sample for sizing and making sure I’m happy with the detail, before starting the wax process.
This is the raw wax mould of the pendant before I cast it into 925 Sterling Silver. It’s a pretty brutal gothic design, with flesh surrounding the skull hidden behind the large front statement.
Why do I choose 925 Sterling Silver and not stainless steel?
I get asked if any of my new designs would be cast into steel, but it simply wouldn’t translate. The problem with steel is that you just can't get the level of detail that you can in 925 Sterling Silver. I love being able to oxidise, buff, and create a unique finish for every piece, whereas with steel, it’s a more standard finish. But all the fine detail of the teeth you can see in the wax mould will get completely lost.
It’s just not as inspiring for me to work with it. Part of what I love is highlighting all the lines, shapes, cuts, and grooves to bring out every brutal bit of detail and design in silver. Silver also ages beautifully over time; the little knocks and patina that happen over years of wearing and use add a personal story. But with all my pieces, there is a lifetime warranty, so if you want to restore that fresh sign, I’m a message away.
